WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAY ABOUT HELL?

“What does the Bible say about Hell?”

THE WAGES OF SIN IS DEATH

God told Adam and Eve in the day they eat of the fruit of the forbidden tree, in that day they would die.  (Gen 2.17)  Looking at things from God’s perspective being He is the One who said it, God was looking at it from a spiritual angle.

When Adam and Eve partook of the fruit, something within them did die.  They fell from their state of innocence.  Did they drop dead physically the moment they partook of the fruit?  NO.  What death was God speaking about?  A spiritual death.  Notice when they heard God’s voice in the garden after sinning, they hid from God.  They sewed fig leaves around themselves to cover their nakedness.   Man is still trying to cover himself with a covering of his own making (good works etc…)God eventually provided coats of skins for them.  Now an animal had to die to provide them a covering.  Jesus Christ is the only true covering for our sins.  He was the perfect Lamb of God who suffered and died for our sins.

So, the death was not a physical death, at least not immediately.  However, because sin was now in their mortal body, death was now working in the physical body.  (Romans 6:12, 13).  Death to the physical body was slow, but the spiritual man now became subject to the body and soul of man.  Before their sin, their spirit was pre-eminent over their body and soul.  God created Adam and Eve as talking spirits with a physical body and a soul (Mind, Will, Emotions).  God could communicate with them.  That close intimacy was lost after their sin.  In fact, they had to be driven OUT of the garden lest they partake of the TREE OF LIFE in the garden and live forever in their sinful state. (Gen 3:22-24)

When a person becomes “saved” their SPIRIT is now redeemed and reclaimed by God.  The Devil cannot have that ONE.  He now belongs to God and has the promise he will resurrect at the resurrection of the Just  (The Rapture of the Church).  The physical body is not yet redeemed.  The Redemption of the body of believers will happen at the Rapture of the Church when our bodies shall be changed in a moment in the twinkling of an eye and we shall be changed  (I Thessalonians 4).  What do we do with this mortal body?  We present it to God and sanctify it(set it apart – save it for God’s use now:  (I Cor 6:19   Romans 12:1,2).

My  point is in answer to the question, Why do we still die?  We must die to pass on to the new spiritual life God has prepared for us in heaven.  The only way we can shed this body is to die, unless the Rapture comes first and we shall be instantly changed.  (2 Corinthians 5:4   I Corinthians 15:54,55).  Jesus died that we may not experience spiritual death (eternal separation from God as a result of sin.)  God loves man and is not willing that any should perish, but God also created man as a free moral agent meaning man has the ability to choose.

We must be careful we don’t put ourselves in a position of judging God.  Satan invited our first parents, Adam and Eve, to judge God through the prompting of the Serpent who was a very subtil creature.  He challenged God’s word by saying, Hath God said?   …..(Genesis 3:1)  He got them to doubt God’s Word.  He got them thinking that God was withholding something good from them because God didn’t want them to be as knowledgeable as Him!  What a boldface lie!  So, in a sense they were judging God.  Shall we judge God because sinners go to Hell?  We live in a moral universe created by a moral and Holy God.

Should murderers and rapists go to prison?  The answer is yes.  Then sinners who violate a Holy God go to hell.  God is a God of Love, but He is also a God of Wrath.  Sin is a violation of His Holy Nature.  God proved His love by sending His only Son so man would not have to be eternally separated from God and go to Hell.  I do know this:  The judge of all the earth, shall He not do right?  (Genesis 18:25)  All man has to do is receive God’s Only Son and he will be spared from eternal damnation.

The Teaching (doctrine) of Hell is laced throughout the whole Bible.  We must be careful when declaring we have a revelation from God or the Holy Spirit that runs counter to the Word of God as revealed in the Bible.  Anything that does not line up with the Bible must be rejected as false.  (Galatians 1:18)

It is important to note the One who spoke most about Hell in the Bible was Jesus Christ Himself.  The prophets spoke of Hell.  The book of Revelation spoke of Hell and Jesus himself spoke of hell most of all.  He should know!  He descended into Hell and led the righteous who were in Abraham’s bosom into the very presence of God.  Hell at that time was located in the center of the earth.  Jesus described Hell as a place of torment, flame and everlasting regret:  true spiritual death.  That is what Jesus came to save us from.  To say the doctrine of Hell is false is actually a step to detract from the real purpose why Jesus came to SAVE US.  HE CAME TO SAVE US FROM ETERNAL DAMNATION AND THE FIRES AND TORMENTS OF HELL WHERE THEIR WORM DIETH NOT AND THE FIRE IS NOT QUENCHED.

Old Testament Scriptures on Hell:

Deut 32:22  2 Sam 22.6  Job 11:8  Job 26:6  Psalms 9:17 – The wicked shall be turned into hell and all the nations that forget God.

Psa 16:10  Psa 18:5  Psalms 55:15   86:13 116:3  139:8  Prov 5;5  7:27  9:18  15:11  15:24  23:14  27:20

ISAIAH 5:14  14:9, 15  28:15,18  EZEKIEL 31:17  32:21,27  AMOS 9;2  JONAH 2:2  HABAKKUK 2:5

NEW TESTAMENT REFERENCES TO HELL (MOSTLY JESUS’ WORDS)

MATTHEW 5;22, 29,30  10:28  11:23 16:18  18:9  23;15,33

MARK 9:43,45,47

LUKE 12;5 – But I shall forewarn you whom ye shall fear.  Fear him which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto fear him.

LUKE 16:23

ACTS 2:27, 31  JAMES 3:6  2 PETER 2:4

REVELATION 1:18  6:8  20;13,14,15

SO THE DOCTRINE OF HELL HAS BEEN AROUND A LONG TIME.  JESUS TAUGHT IT AND WARNED PEOPLE SO THEY COULD AVOID IT.

MORE THOUGHTS ON HELL

We are not to judge God.  We are to trust God.

A sin against a holy God is an eternal act and requires eternal punishment.  If  this is hard to grasp it is only because we do not understand the depth of the word HOLY.  God is Holy, Sinless, Perfect, Pure.  God is love, but that is not his only characteristic.  He is also a God of Wrath.  The Book of Revelation deals much with the wrath of God on those who hate him and rebuff his gift of Salvation.  How shall we escape if we neglect so great a Salvation?  (Heb 2:3)

The Bible describes Hell as a place of conscious eternal punishment.  The Bible teaches that Man will live forever either in unceasing joy or in unceasing torment.  This is the most serious of matters.  God is to be loved, but He is also to be revered and feared in a godly way.

We need to take the Doctrine of Hell seriously.  Jesus taught about it and warned people about it.  Those who reject Jesus Christ are in the path of the wrath of God.  (Eph 2:3)  What wrath?  The wrath of God.  Eph 5:6  Colossians 3:6

THE GOOD NEWS!  THERE IS SALVATION!  IT IS NO ONE ELSE BUT JESUS CHRIST!  ACTS 4;12 John 14:6

JESUS TAUGHT THAT HELL IS A PLACE OF TORMENT, PAIN, FLAME AND ETERNALPUNISHMENT.  Eternity is a long long time.

Read the Story of the Rich Man and Lazarus in Luke 16:19.

Hell is a real place.  The Hebrew word is SHEOL.  The Greek word is HADES.

In the End, Death and Hell will be cast into the Lake of Fire prepared for the Devil and his angels.  All those whose names are not written in the book of Life will go there.  We are to fear the One Who has the power after He has killed, to cast both body and soul into Hell.  He is the One we fear.

Hell is a place of refuse.  Jesus likened it to Gehenna, a place outside Jerusalem where they burned refuse and garbage.  Gehenna used to be a place where Israel offered their sons and daughters to heathen gods in human sacrifice.  King Joash made it a place to burn waste.  There was a continual smoke and fire and stench.  Jesus likened hell to be like that.  God doesn’t want anyone to go to Hell.  Hell is a Bible Truth, Jesus taught it and He is the Way,The Truth and The Life.  He is the Way to Escape Hell.  If one only believes on Him and allow their sins to be washed away in his blood.  Our spirit is redeemed and we shall be eternally saved.

We need to be careful what we believe and what we hear.  There are many voices in the world today.  There are many seducing spirits and doctrines of devils that lead men and women to believe what is contrary to the Word of God we find in the Bible.  (I TIM 4:1).  Unless our sins are judged at the Cross, Hell is the result.  We need to tell others about Jesus.  He came to save us.
